• Provide the students with a controversial statement about the text (e.g. USSR has a superior government style during the cold war to the US). Have the students make a judgment about the statement and be prepared to share their beliefs with the class.

• Have the students judge why a person may attempt to defect from their native country and support their judgment with information from the novel.

• Have the students judge the effectiveness, so far, of the author's ability to show the reader parallels between USSR and the USA. The students should be prepared to defend their judgment to the class.
