Ginsberg grew up in New Jersey following WW I. The war changed many things about the country, many of which Ginsberg did not like or understand.

2. What was Ginsberg's relationship to Carl Solomon?

Ginsberg saw something in Carl Solomon that could not be explained in words. The two men became fast friends and experienced many things together including the formation of the Beat Generation.

3. Who is William Carlos Williams?

William Carlos Williams is a fellow poet and friend of Ginsberg's. Williams wrote the introduction to HOWL and lent insight into Ginsberg's work.

4. What kind of experiences took place in HOWL? To what does Williams compare those experiences?

Ginsberg went through a variety of horrifying experiences in his life. Williams refers to them as being a trip through hell.
