Characters

Charles Yu - This is the narrator and protagonist of the novel, and he is an unmarried, lonely young man of about 31 who has low self-esteem.

Charles's father - This character was an engineer who labored at home on the invention of the first time machine, finally creating a prototype and demonstrating it to the director of a prestigious scientific institute. After the machine failed, he eventually created another one, traveled to an alternate universe and did not return.
