Objective

Assigning a genre to a book is way of classifying and organizing it. The genre of the novel Hoot is realistic fiction. This means the story is not a true story, but it could potentially happen. Everything involved in it, such as the location, types of characters, and types of problems actually exist. The objective of this lesson is to study the genre of Hoot.

Lesson

Class discussion: What does “genre” mean? How does assigning a book a genre help readers? What genre would you classify Hoot under? Could Hoot fall into more than one genre?

Activity: Divide students into partners and have them prepare a five-minute presentation on what would need to change about Hoot in order to make it a different genre than it currently is. Be sure to have students explain the new genre they are transforming it in to.
