Objective

Berrenger Sauniere was a parish priest in the small coastal town of Rennes-le-Chateau. Discuss Sauniere and the priest's role in uncovering the history of the Holy Grail.

Lesson

1. Discuss Sauniere's occupation as a parish priest. What kind of power did a parish priest have? If Sauniere was ambitious, why did he settle for the parish in Rennes-le-Chateau? What were Sauniere's duties? To whom did Sauniere report? What studies helped Sauniere in discovering the importance of the parchments?

2. Create your own version of the parchments. Use parchment paper and age it to appear as if it had been hidden for centuries. Share with the class.

3. Visit a parish and/or parish priest to better understand the duties and obligations involved.

4. Homework: Research Rennes-le-Chateau and create an overview of the region, including people, culture, politics, religion, and geography.
