Objective

Chapter 1 - The novel is initially set in England, during the era of Napoleon Bonaparte, but two of the major characters are sailing across the globe. This lesson establishes setting. (materials: a wall map of the world; one or preferably more World Atlases.)

Lesson

1. Class discussion: Napoleon Bonaparte of France is waging war in the early 19th century. Most of the characters in the novel are British. Does anyone in the class know about British-French relations at the time? What about the British Naval fleet around 1800--is it powerful? A few details about Britain and France may have to be supplied if the class has not studied this part of European history. Since Britain is a colonial power, how much of the world does it control at that time? How long has Britain been out of the business of ruling the then new United States?
