Objective

In Chapter 1, Bill Cooper jackknifes his truck on an icy road. Several factors are at play that cause this accident, and as a result, others are injured. This lesson will discuss the perils of drinking and driving.

Lesson

1) Initiate a class discussion on the factors that caused this accident. Should Bill Cooper be held accountable since he was drinking? Should the reasons he was drinking be taken into consideration?

2) Break the class into groups of three or four and have them each research a different ways of dealing with the kind of grief that Bill was after the death of his wife. What could Bill have done had he not been drinking?

3) While still in groups, query whether or not drinking and driving has ever been something they were exposed to. How was it handled? Have they ever accepted a ride with someone who had been...
