Lesson

1. The teacher lectures on the historical times [Michelangelo working on the Sistine Chapel; the materialistic corruption of the church; the beginnings of the Renaissance]

2. The teacher leads the students in discussing Luther's spiritual and emotional characteristics including the following:

(1) Luther's obsession with his relationship to God after his near death experience with lightning.

(2) The prevailing Catholic thought of salvation through performing ritual and good deeds.

(3) What it is about Luther that makes him go against the wishes of his family and join the monastery.

(4) The psychological makeup of Luther that causes his strong mood swings throughout his life.
