1. Explain where the narrator is at the beginning of Chapter 1 and what he spends his time doing.

At the beginning of Chapter 1, the narrator is in an elevator. He seems to be a little confused and unsure of himself, because he isn't sure of whether or not the elevator is moving and he sees no buttons and no way of controlling the situation. He counts and recounts the coins in his pockets, which he seems to do compulsively, and he coughs and whistles a tune just to break the silence, before the doors finally open.

2. Give a brief description of the beasts introduced in Chapter 2.

The narrator says the beasts are hoofed animals that have a variety of different colored coats, ranging from black to brown to white, but when the autumn approaches, the fur of all the beasts turns completely golden. The beasts have a single strange horn, which the narrator says sticks out of their foreheads like a broken bone, and stays white even though the beasts otherwise turn gold.
