Lesson 1 (from Section 1 (Introduction))

Objective

This lesson introduces students to the book Hamilton: The Revolution. In the class, students will be introduced to a number of technical terms from musical theater and will research and discuss the award-winning Broadway production of Hamilton. In the book’s introduction, primary author Jeremy McCarter establishes the focus of the book: an examination of the inspiration, development, and production of the musical. “It tells the stories of two revolutions. There’s the American Revolution of the 18th century…” and “There’s also the revolution of the show itself…” (10).

Lesson

Group Activity: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each. As a group, read the Introduction to Hamilton: The Revolution. Following the reading, discuss what you currently know about the musical and its run on Broadway. When was the musical produced and what has its reception been like?
