GULAG stands for "Glavnoe Upravlenie Lagerei," which roughly translates to "main camp administration" in English. Over time, however, Gulag came to stand for not only the broad network of labor camps set up in Russia but also the use of slave labor in any country during the time from 1910 to 1980.

2. How many prisoners passed through the gates of Gulag labor camps during the time they were open, and what happened to the buildings after Stalin's death?

It is estimated that more than 18 million prisoners passed through Gulag gates from 1929 to 1953. There were 84 labor camps networked across Russia, and when Stalin died in 1953, many of those camps were transformed into prisons, which would increase the number of prisoners significantly if those figures were meant to be included.
