Part I, Chapters One through Six

• Attorneys Mark Dooher and Wes Farrell are having lunch and discussing their lives. Wes and his wife, Lydia, are divorcing and Mark says he cannot divorce his wife, Sheila, because of his role as attorney for the Catholic Archdiocese.

• Later on Mark sees a junior partner in the law firm, Joe Avery, with a very attractive girl.

• Mark invites Joe to a party at his home tonight in the hopes that he will bring the pretty girl. Joe arrives with the girl and introduces her as Christina Carrera.

• Mark and Christina talk for awhile and he recommends that she apply for the summer intern position at the firm and she agrees even though she had earlier told Joe she wouldn't because Joe is in charge of hiring interns and she didn't want it to look like he was playing favorites.
