Objective

GREEN HILLS OF AFRICA is Hemingway's memoir of a trip to East Africa in 1933.


The aim of this lesson is to introduce the book.

Lesson

1. Class discussion. What do the students already know about Ernest Hemingway? What can the students tell about the book by looking at its cover, reading the title and reading the foreword? What do the students expect from the book? Why do they expect these things to happen? To what extent do they think the memoir will be fictional or non-fictional?

2. With the students look at the opinions Hemingway reveals in the opening chapter. Divide the students into pairs and ask the students to write down five opinions or thoughts Hemingway reveals and to write down their possible significance to the rest of the book.
