1. What is Katsa doing at the beginning of the book, and what does she do with the people who would stop her?

Katsa sneaking into a dungeon and preparing to overpower a group of guards. Katsa has overpowering force due to her Graced power and knocks out a series of guards, then gives them sleeping pills.

2. What is Giddon doing with Katsa at the beginning of the book?

Katsa arrives at the old Lienid man Tealiff's jail cell and leaves as her accomplice Giddon begins to pick the lock on the Lienid man's cell. Katsa must overpower all the other guards. Katsa knocks out the guards, but deliberately does not kill them, as had been decided at a meeting of the secret Council.

3. Who pulls a knife on Katsa, and what does she do about him?

As Katsa walks out, a young Graced fighter surprises her and puts a knife to her throat. She pushes off his arm, but is cautious. The young man realizes that she is Katsa the famous lady killer, while Katsa assumes that he is a Lienid from his appearance. Katsa decides she does not want to kill him. When his guard is down, she knocks him out.
