Character Descriptions

This section provides a short description of all the major characters in the book. This can be printed out as a study guide for students, used as a "key" for leading a class discussion, or you can jump to the quiz/homework section to find worksheets that incorporate these descriptions into a variety of question formats.

Characters

Elisha - He is the nephew of the pastor of the Temple of the Fire of the Baptized. He has been publicly chastised in front of the congregation for "walking disorderly," meaning that they had been walking with a girl without supervision and might have given in to temptation and had sex.

Elizabeth - She an apologist for her husband's brutality, explaining to her children that he works hard to provide for them. It is not until much later in the novel that the reasons for her meekness appear.
