Objective

The objective of this lesson is to explore mystery as a genre. A Good Girl's Guide to Murder is a classic mystery story. Pip works to find out who, if anyone, killed Andie Bell. This lesson prepares students to read and discuss effectively by introducing them to key terms and characteristics related to the genre.

Lesson

Reading Activity: Distribute copies of pages 1 and 2 of Scholastic's "Genre Characteristics Chart" (available online). Give students time to read and highlight key points.

Viewing Activity and Share: Show students "Defective Detective" by Avner Geller and Stevie Lewis (available online). As they watch, ask them to use the genre chart information to make notes about which mystery parts they see in this video. Have students share their ideas after the video is finished.
