Objective

The aim of this lesson is to introduce the book.

Lesson

1. Class discussion. What do the students already know about Yiyun Li? What can the students tell about the book by looking at its cover, reading the title, and front leaf of the book? What do the students expect from the book? Why do they expect these things to happen?

2. With the students examine the beginning of each story. How do they start? How is the main character introduced? Divide the students into pairs and ask the students to write down the differences between each story, and to write down their possible significance to the rest of the book. After 10 minutes, ask the students to join up with another pair to share their work and discuss.
