Manhattan - This is the island of New York City where most of the characters live and where the major action takes place.

Westchester - This is a suburban county in New York, north of Manhattan, where Paul and Kathryn Hobbes met while living there with their families.

Spanish Harlem - This is a predominantly Latino neighborhood where Bianca and Agatson both live.

New Jersey Wharf - This area is across the river from Manhattan, where the friends go to drink after Agatson's death toward the end of the novel.
