• The narrator’s stomach is touching the ground.

• The narrator stoops and stares at his own face, his right cheek flattened on the concrete.

• His eyes are wide open; his mouth is, too.

• The narrator is dead.

• His arms are outstretched like he is trying to fly like Superman.

• He had barely turned before two bullets hit him and he fell hard, hitting the snowy ground.

• The narrator’s Ma is running, wailing.

• A policeman holds her back.

• Another policeman is standing over the narrator, murmuring, “It’s a kid, it’s a kid” (3).

• Ma is struggling, gasping like she cannot breathe...
