Chapter 1

This book is partially autobiographical. The objective of this lesson is to review some major aspects of Ernest Hemingway's life, and to discuss how having this book partially autobiographical affects the plot and the feeling of the book.

Lesson

1) Provide a brief overview of Ernest Hemingway's life along with some of the major events in his life. Split the class into groups and assign each group one of the major events from his life. Instruct each group to study their event and write about how this event would have shaped his life and affected his writing style. Allow each group to present their information. Discuss some of the different ideas that are presented.

2) Review each separate character that is in the first chapter. Have the students identify each character named, and the classify them as the protagonist, a main character, a minor character, a foil...
