Objective
Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic is a graphic memoir by American author Alison Bechdel. As a graphic memoir, the author relates the narrative of her childhood and adolescence through the format of comic illustrations. The drawings used to tell the story are all shaded in hues of blue, reflecting the tragic aspects of the events being recalled. This lesson focuses on the author and genres of Fun Home. Students will identify the genres that comprise the book and will research Alison Bechdel, her comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For, and will discuss major themes in her works.

Research Activity: Conduct research on the author and publication of the graphic memoir, as well as the influences that inspired Alison Bechdel. Where did the author grow up? Where did she attend college? What did she study? What works has she published?
