The aim of this lesson is to examine SMERSH.

Lesson

1) Classroom discussion. How does Fleming represent SMERSH in comparison to how he represents the British Secret Service? Do the students think Fleming's representation of SMERSH is fair? What does it say about SMERSH that they would hire a man like Grant? How do the student think the Russians represented the MI5?

2) Divide the students into two groups and within those groups divide the students into pairs. Ask one group to research and develop a presentation about Fleming's representation of SMERSH in the Bond novels and the other groups to research and develop a presentation about the real SMERSH. How do the two compare?
