Frightful is a peregrine falcon. She was taken by Sam at two weeks old and trained as a hunter by him. Frightful is the protagonist of the novel and the narrative centers on her actions in finding her way home and balancing nature versus domestication.

2. Where is the main setting of the novel? Describe this setting.

The main narrative is set in Delhi, a small town in Upstate New York amidst the Catskill Mountains. The surrounding areas are also a large part of the story, including the home of Sam Gribley, who lives in a hollowed-out hemlock tree in the nearby woods.

3. What is Frightful's main objective in the beginning of the novel? What actions does she take toward that objective in "Frightful Takes Off"?

Frightful, having been captured by poachers, has the central objective of getting back to Sam and Sam's home in the beginning of the novel. In "Frightful Takes Off," Frightful is released by Alice and then rises high in order to pick out the mountain on which Sam lives.
