1. Describe what Julio is doing at the beginning of Part 1, Chapter 1, and what he has recently done.
In the beginning of Part 1, Chapter 1, Julio is waiting in the Garden of Chapelle Expiatoire for the arrival of Marguerite Laurier, his lover. He has just returned from Argentina where he obtained the money necessary to enable him to marry Marguerite.
2. Describe Julio's return to France, as detailed in Part 1, Chapter 1.
At the beginning of the trip the German captain of the boat is friendly to the French passengers; however, as rumors of war abound, the captain becomes less friendly. Julio often joins the captain and others passengers in the smoking room at night and refuses, at first, to comment on their discussions, but as the conversation becomes tenser, Julio is unable to refrain from commenting. The ship finally draws close to the coast of France where they find the Channel Fleet stationed and the Germans quietly urge the passengers to disembark quicker than initially planned.
