Objective

Comparison of the author's notations of this generation compared to those of the Civil War and WWII - this allows the student to see why the chapter is named "generation" and gives the student a historical perspective.

Lesson

Class Discussion: The author lists the generation of 1780-1800, 1855-1865 and the 1940's as examples of crucial periods in American history. Why are each of these important? What happened in these years, and what decisions were made that affected America so much? What are the repercussions of these events in today's world?

Class Assignment: Divide the class into three sections and assign each section a date. Have them research the critical events, and list the persons who were leaders and whose actions shaped the events. How did America survive these critical events?
