1. What does Lewis learn he must live up to at an early age?

By the age of six, Lewis learns that he must live up to his legendary father's expectations. Lewis's father, Chesty Puller, is a famous brigadier general and a military genius. As a boy, Lewis feels the weight of his father's fame. His desire to live up to his father's expectations motivates Lewis to excel in all he does. Later in life, Lewis understands that he will always live in his father's shadow.

2. What lessons does Lewis learn from his father as a young boy?

As a young boy, Lewis learns lessons from his father that are designed to build character. When the recoil of a .45-caliber pistol accidentally blackens Lewis' eye, the young boy learns that he should not cry in front of other men.
