Lesson 1 (from Book I)
In Chapter 1, Renee decides to get some professional help. The objective of this lesson is to determine when it's appropriate to handle a situation on your own and when it's prudent to seek professional intervention.
1) Partner Project: Read through the first chapter and write down the different aspects in Renee's life that might lead her to pursue counseling.
2) Partner Discussion: Discuss Renee's attitude towards counseling. Did she get what she wanted from her first visit? What surprised her about her meeting with Lynn?
3) Small Group Debate: Split the group in two and hold a debate over whether or not Renee was using counseling appropriately.
4) Homework: Research some places to go to when a person is in need of psychiatric help. Write down at least three sources of help and be prepared to share them with the class.
