Objective

The purpose of this lesson is for students to analyze the role that the internet, specifically social media, and dating apps, have on Toby and the other characters.

Toby has been married for 14 years. Now that he is single, he has embarked on a newly single life that relies heavily on dating apps. In addition to the dating apps, Toby recognizes that the life that people lead on the internet, via these apps and social media is often in stark contrast to their real lives. This is one of the ongoing themes of the novel: who people are on the internet verse who they are in their real lives.
