• Chapter 1 opens with the main character, Nanda Kaul, in her small cabin in Carignano in Kasauli.

• Alone, Nanda notices a postman and hopes he does not stop at her house and disturb her solitude.

• Nanda had come to Carignano to “be done with them all,” the “bags and letters, messages and demands, requests, promises and queries” (3).
