Objective

Objective: Ivan Turgenev is one of Russia's foremost novellists and fathers and Sons is credited as on of the third and finest example of modern Russian literature. The aim of this lesson is to learn about Turgenev as a writer and person.

1) With the students brainstorm what they already know about Ivan Turgenev. What influence has he had on popular culture? What other books has he written? Do his books tend to be similar in their styles and themes? Divide the students into pairs and ask them to research Turgenev's life and write a short biography. End the lesson by comparing the student's work. How much of Turgenev's's personality and style do you think is within Fathers and Sons.

2) With the students brainstorm what they know about Turgenev's other novels. Did he just write novels? What themes do they cover? Divide the students into pairs and assign...
