The USS Proteus

This was the submarine tender on which John Sidney McCain Senior and John Sidney McCain Junior met several hours after the end of World War II. John McCain has a photograph of the event, which he prizes.

The United States Naval Academy

This was the school that all three of the McCain men who are highlighted in this book attended.

Guadacanal

John Sidney McCain Senior was awarded this for his leadership during the Guadalcanal campaign. It was the first amphibious operation conducted by American forces since the Spanish-American War.

USS Gunnel

This is the second submarine that Jack commanded during World War II. He commanded it for five combat patrols, including one where they almost ran out of air.

London

Jack was sent here to assume command of all the United States naval forces in Europe. This appointment gave him his fourth star.
