1. Why does the old man wake up?

The old man wakes up from what he initially thinks is a dream until he realizes that the neigbor's horse has not whinnied. The horse has whinnied at the same time for as long as he can remember and its absence has disturbed him from his sleep.

2. What does the old man see from his bedroom window?

The old man looks out of his bedroom window and over towards his neighbor's farm. He sees the black stable door and a lantern standing above, but still hears no sign of the horse. As he looks towards his neighbor's house he sees a broken window.

3. What do the old man and his wife see when they enter the Lovgren's house?

When they enter their neighbor's house they see Maria Lovgren tied to a chair with a noose around her neck, conscious, but barely breathing. Her husband lying dead on the floor. The old man can only see Johannes's foot because a curtain hides the rest of his body.
