Objective

Pym is often regarded as a 20th century Jane Austen because her novels explore the social manners of her time in a witty and satiric tone. Pym is also often regarded as one of the most underrated authors of the 20th century. This lesson discusses the author of the novel Excellent Women, Barbara Pym.

Lesson

1) Library research: Have students research the author, Barbara Pym. Explore the other works she has written, as well as her background. Take a look at interviews and reviews to gain information on her writing and where Excellent Women fits in with her other novels.

2) Presentation: Have students get into pairs and prepare a presentation, using their research on Barbara Pym and her canon. Have each group read an excerpt from an additional Pym novel which contains a similarity to an element found in Excellent Women. At the end of the presentations...
