• Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City is a nonfiction book by American sociologist and author Matthew Desmond. The book examines issues of affordable housing, extreme poverty, and exploitation of the poor.

• To make his points, the author details the lives of several families in inner-city Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the challenges they each face in securing stable housing.

• The Author’s Note informs the reader that the events of the book largely took place between May, 2008 and December, 2009. He adds that the names of tenants, their family members, and their landlords have been changed to protect their privacy.
