Gretel

This is the main character of the novel. She searches for her mother who disappeared when she was 16. She is a lexicographer.

Sarah

This character has two daughters. One daughter she leaves in a dust bin when she is a baby, and the other she abandons when the daughter is 16. At the end of her life she struggles with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Marcus/Margot

This child was abandoned in a dust bin when she was a baby. When she is told of something horrible she will do to her father and mother, she leaves her adopted parents’ home.

Fiona

This character is a neighbor to a family with a daughter. She sees premonitions and tells the daughter of the family that she will do something horrible to her mother and father.

Charlie

This character lives on a boat and has a daughter. His partner takes the baby...
