A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Bring in the oldest photograph you can find from your family, or one that you are allowed to bring. Looking at people in the picture, create a back story for the people in the picture. What are their lives like? What kind of world do they live in? What are their struggles? Their joys?

A picture is the impetus for the novel Everything is Illuminated. The questions Jonathan has about the woman and her relationship with his grandfather is what drives him to travel abroad.
