Lesson 1 (from "The White Room" - "The Welcome Committee")
This lesson introduces students to Nicola Yoon’s young adult romance novel Everything, Everything. Students will research the author and Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disease, read the first four chapters, and identify and discuss the narrative style and setting of the book. Everything, Everything follows protagonist and narrator Madeline Whittier, a sufferer of SCID or “bubble baby disease,” and her coming of age through meeting a teenage boy who moves in next door.
Group Assignment: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each to read “The White Room” through “Stays the Same” in Everything, Everything. Following your reading, analyze the setting that has been established in these chapters and develop a visual project that depicts your interpretation of the novel’s setting. What color is predominant in the setting?
Research/Independent Activity: Take time in class to conduct research on author Nicola Yoon and her other works...
