Objective

Evelina is an epistolary novel, or a novel written as a collection of letters. This lesson will explore epistolary style.

Lesson

Oral Reading: As a class read Letter I – Letter IX.

Class Discussion: What is unique about the author’s delivery of the story? Have you read other books that use this form? Why might the author have chosen this form? What is this method of delivery called?

Research /Essay Writing: Research epistolary novels. Then write a one-page essay on your findings. Include the titles of other noted works written in this form.

Creative Writing: In regular prose form, rewrite the contents of Letter I as the opening of a short story. Be sure that your paragraph flows without adding or subtracting events to the contents of the letter.

Homework: Write your own Letter I as an introduction to your own epistolary novel.
