Lesson 1 (from Prologue: Shade of Fear | Discovery)

Objective

The first chapter in the book has a "Shade" in the book as well as "Urgals." The reader may not first recognize these words. The object of this lesson is to encourage students to infer meaning from the context of unfamiliar words.

Lesson

1) Discussion: Have the class look at the way that the words are used in the text. What about it explains the Shades and the Urgals before their definitions are given?

2) Classwork: Have the students list other literary works that they have encountered that used unfamiliar words in their text. Examples would be Harry Potter, Peter Pan, and Lord of the Rings. Are the words ever left completely to the readers own interpretation? Does this detract from the work? Explain.

3) Homework: Have the students find several words in real life that would have caused confusion when they were first heard. These words can be...
