Objective

In Part 1 when Derfel begins his story, it is Samain Eve. The objective of this lesson is to discuss Samain Eve and what it means to Derfel and to Bishop Sansum.

Lesson

1) Research: Look up the term Samain (also Samhain) Eve, and write a few sentences describing it. Write the answers to these questions: What time of year on the calendar that is used today would Samain have been? How would the event mark the end of harvest? How did this event divide the year into parts? What is the rough translation of the word "Samain"? According to Celtic lore, how do the boundaries between death and life change at Samain? Why were meals be prepared for the dead at this time?

2) Class discussion: What day of the year is it? What is the night called? From what Derfel writes, what season of the year is...
