Objective

One of the most important elements in the Dune series is the spice, melange. The spice grants those who use it strange powers of prediction, prescience, and even near-immortality.

The story is centered upon Paul's use, and control of, the spice.

Lesson

1 - Class discussion: What does the spice do? Why is it important? How did Paul gain control of the spice? To what contemporary and real substances can the spice be compared? Is the spice a drug? Would you want to use it?

2 - Brainstorming: As a class, brainstorm a list of reasons why people would want to use drugs. Then, brainstorm another list on why people would want to use the spice, melange. Compare the two lists.

3 - Group work and presentation: Divide the class into groups of 3-4. Each group chooses a drug from the real world and presents it to the class...
