1. What does Paul think about while he pretends to be asleep?

Paul wonders about Mohiam's words and his mother's past in the Bene Gesserit sisterhood before becoming the duke's concubine. He thinks about their new home on the desert planet Arrakis. He knows their mortal enemies, the Harkonnens, have been turned out after governing there for 80 years.

Mohiam orders Paul to insert his hand into a cube and holds a metal object near his neck called a gob jabber that kills instantly if he moves. Paul recites the Litany Against Fear. His arm throbs and builds to a painful burning before Mohiam declares no woman child has endured this much. Paul withdraws his hand and sees no damage.

3. What do Mohim and Jessica say about Paul in private?

Mohiam and Jessica speak privately on the evening of Paul's ordeal. Mohiam demands to know why Jessica has disobeyed orders and given birth to a son. She says a daughter could have sealed the dynastic rift with the Harkonnens and both bloodlines could now be lost. Mohiam reminds Jessica of how the Imperial Household and the Guild control human society, warning that Jessica cannot shield her son from the forces.
