Objective

Objective: Act 1, Scene 1 The Duchess of Malfi was originally performed in the early 1600's and is written in Early Modern English, which is often confusing and inaccessible for students not familiar with the language. Additionally, the majority of the characters are introduced early in the play, often in rapid and chaotic ways. The objective of this lesson is to help students become familiar with the play's characters and what the reader learns about them in the first scene of the play. Extra attention should be paid to helping students become familiar with the language in which the play is written.

1) Begin class with a focusing exercise. Have students write for 5 minutes in response to the following prompt: "What is your experience reading plays in Early Modern English? How comfortable are with what you're read already?" Collect their responses.
