Readers learn the narration of the novel in Part 1, Chapter 1. During this chapter, it is shown how the narration of the novel changes between Ruth and Amanda. The objective of this lesson is to learn the narration of the novel and the effects it causes.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: When the novel begins, Ruth is narrating the story. Then it suddenly changes and Amanda becomes the narrator. Why is there more than one narrator in the novel? Is one narrator easier to trust than another? Why does the author decide to have two narrators so early on in the novel?

2) Partner Discussion: Amanda has a personal narration with the readers. What does Amanda inform readers of? Is this type of personal narration necessary? What does this personal narration show about Amanda's role in the novel?

3) Journal Writing: Write a paragraph or two in a journal...
