Hoke Coleburn - This character is sixty years old when the play begins and is unemployed, uneducated African American.

Daisy - When the play opens, this character is a seventy-two-year-old, independent, and stubborn widow living alone.

Boolie Werthan - The child of another character, this person is forty years old when the play begins. This person has taken over the family printing company, and over the course of the play, develops into one of the city's leading business figures.

Florine Werthan - Although never seen by the audience, this person is still a lively character. This person is Jewish but socializes with the Christian community, has high social aspirations, is a member of many organizations, and values social status and symbols more than family.
