Objective

The objective of this lesson is to take a closer look at the first chapter, its symbolism, and the relationship between brother and sister.

Lesson

1) Initiate a class discussion on the relationship between Berem and his sister, Jasla. In three words, how is their relationship best described?

2) Break the class into groups of two or three and have them analyze the relationship between the two siblings. How is this relationship similar to other brother/sister relationships? How is it different?

3) In short essay form, examine some of the symbols in the story. What do the jewels represent, and how are they revealed to this representation? How does each characters reaction to the jewels also create a symbol?

4) In essay form, take a closer look at the events that led to Jasla's death. Discuss whether or not...
