Opening

Theresa Hak Kyung Cha's autobiographical work may present some challenges to students' expectations of genre and generic conventions. The objective of this lesson is to engage students from the start with the genre of this work.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: Ask students for their initial reactions to the form of the work. What genre were they expecting as they began reading? How did the book compare to these expectations? What is Cha doing with our expectations of genre?

2) Group Work: Refresh students' knowledge of various literary genres (e.g the novel, poetry, creative non-fiction, short story, etc.). Then ask students to identify the elements of the text which allow us to classify the work. For instance, the novel begins with many passages of poetic, fragmented language, so can we classify it as poetry? Or, because it contains language exercises, might we consider it a textbook?
