Chapter 1

Character names and titles usually convey context within a story and with regard to main characters can be essential to the storyline. The objective of this lesson is to explore the importance and impact of character names and titles.

Lesson

1) Symbolism: What are the elements and significance of the name Dicey? The name Tillerman? Is Dicey a "real" name or an author construct? Must a character have a "real" name in the conventional sense?

2) Literary Elements: The title Gram is unconventional in what is missing rather than what is present. The title is an obvious derivative of the word grandmother, yet the motherhood element has been removed and, likewise, the grand element denoting generational (mother/grandmother) has been diluted. Discuss how the use of a title in this instance dilutes some of the traditional images of a grandmother.
