1. Why does Greg say he had a lousy summer?

Greg says he had a lousy summer. His family did not go anywhere, and his father made him join the swim team again. Greg does not really like swimming, and he did not like being at the pool at 7:30 a.m. when the water was so freezing cold.

2. Why does Greg walk home every day after swimming?

Rodrick is supposed to take Greg home after swimming every day. However, Rodrick's van does not actually have seats, so Greg has to squeeze in the back with all the band equipment. Greg decides it is better to walk home than to get brain damage riding in the back of the van.
