Objective

Objective: The novel is set in Germany before and during World War I. The aim of this lesson is to examine the novel's setting.

1) Class discussion. What changes were happening in Germany in the years before the First World War? How does Hesse reflect these changes? How did Germany change after the First World War? What suggestions are there in the novel that Germany was already moving in this direction?

2) Ask the students to answer the following questions in essay format: What was the political situation in Germany before the First World War? How does Hesse use uses character and themes to reflect the situation?

3) Divide the students into groups of three and ask them to research the period the novel is set in, noting the cultural background of German society at the time. Who were famous authors? Artists? Musicians?
